It's official! Apple has sent out press invitations for a September 10 event where it is widely expected that Tim Cook will unveil the iPhone 11. The event will take place at the company’s Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California. As with past events, Apple will stream the event live on its website and on Apple TV when it kicks off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time (18.00 in the UK). If a two-hour tech conference isn’t for you, rest assured I’ll be summarising all the important details, especially for photographers, on my website and social media.
Apple will typically remain tight-lipped regarding just what will be announced, however their invitation came with the tagline "By innovation only", which has intentionally heightened expectations in online forums and social media. In amongst some wild speculation, what we can reasonably expect is the iPhone 11 (and were still not sure if this will be the naming convention) will be available in three options, each with camera improvements. A 3-lens camera system that has ultra wide shooting capabilities and improved low-light performance is thought to be offered in at least one iPhone. Bilateral wireless charging, bigger batteries, a new AMX co-processor and A13 chip are some of the other features that are being highly tipped.
We can look forward to the release of iOS 13 with new features in the Camera and Photos apps. We may see upgrades to other hardware, plus other operating system updates including Apple Arcade and Apple TV Plus.
Amid all the hype and speculation, you can be sure of great news coming for iPhone photography - stay tuned!
